Misty Copeland—prodigy, performer and passionate person paving paths for the next generation!
Misty is a shining inspiration for her graceful strength amidst adversity. It is not only her dance accomplishments but life outlook that helps us see the world of a ballerina through a different lens.
According to Misty’s website she “made history by becoming the third African American soloist and first in two decades, at American Ballet Theater.”
Her journey included growing up with a single mom bouncing between living locations including a motel with her 5 siblings, starting ballet at the age of 13 at the local Boys and Girls club, en pointe within three months, and joining the American Ballet Theater at age 17.
“Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start.”-Nido Quebin
I am amazed at how she extends her energy through every part of her body in dance and right into making a positive difference for her upcoming artists. She embraces her identity and uses it as a platform for outreach.
The American Ballet Theater’s diversity initiative, Project Plié seeks to “increase racial and ethnic representation in ballet and diversify America’s ballet companies” through partnerships between the community and industry. In addition to Misty’s involvement with Project Plié she gives back with her time to Boys and Girls club children, is on the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition and embodies a role model who pursues her passion.
Misty breaks boundaries on what is a typical ballerina and is only 5ft 2! Her focused power and grace is only matched by her shining spirit to go after and work for what she loves. She actively practices her art and the discipline of seeing positive possibilities of growth!
Ready to be a standard breaker? Ready to see positive possibilities? Ready to pursue your passion?
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”-Harriet Tubman
